Designing a project at home

You don’t have to work in a regulated research laboratory!

Determine if you can complete the following criteria I. You must identify a novel idea and conduct appropriate and related literature research. Review the newest science findings at Science News and Science!

• Research should NOT include your opinion
• Do NOT review and focus on unnecessary facts not relevant to your proposed question, hypothesis or work

II. Write a research plan;  follow safety and competition guidelines (see collegiate laboratory safety guideline from Stony Brook University, review safety procedures associated with experimentation (review MSDS’s, BSL’s, etc.)

• Use the Intel ISEF website to conceptualize and outline the proper format when writing a research plan.
• MSDS review
  • Chemical manufacturers must send an MSDS with each new shipment
  • Students and laboratories must maintain any MSDSs received with incoming shipments of hazardous chemicals, and ensure rapid accessibility
  • Review and understand all MSDS sections and understand the information
  • Samples can be viewed on Fisher Scientific if a free registered user (http://www.fishersci.com/ )
  • Samples can be viewed on Sigma-Aldrich if a free registered user (http://www.sigmaaldrich.com/united-states.html )
  • We recommend making an MSDS book of chemicals used. Keep this book in your work area for emergencies (take to Emergency Department)
